Why do you need an effective RF earth?

  • Minimise unwanted currents in your shack
  • Reduce unwanted interference
  • Improve the efficiency and effectiveness of your antenna
  • Reduce likelihood of receiving RF shocks
  • Reduce unwanted interference to your radio, computer and electrical appliances

Suggestions

  • Install an electrician’s earth stake as close as possible to your shack.  Connect a heavy gauge wire from the stake back to a central point near your equipment.  (house earthing wire is a good option – refer links)
  • Connect the earth point from all equipment to the earth lead
  • Weatherproof your earth stake and check for a good electrical connection periodically

Construction or installation notes

  • Exercise care when selecting where to install the earth stake.  Be aware of water pipes, electrical conduits or house foundations.
